Hildegard Bechtler was born in Stuttgart, trained at Camberwell and Central St. Martin’s Schools and now lives and works in London.
Current and upcoming work: Mary Stuart at the Duke of York's, Mood Music at the Old Vic, Oedipus for the Toneelgroep Amsterdam and Antony and Cleopatra at the National Theatre.
Most recently, Hildegard designed the set and costumes for Hamlet directed by Robert Icke and starring Andrew Scott at the Almeida Theatre which then transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre.

Hildegard won an Olivier Award in 2011 for her design of After the Dance and received nominations for Top Hat in 2012 and Oresteia in 2016. She was nominated for the Evening Standard Best Designer Award for Iphigenia at Aulis and won the Australian Green Room Award for Best Opera Design for Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at Sydney Opera House.
