Tobias trained at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin.

 

His designs include: Boulevard Solitude (Laurence Olivier Award 2001 ‘Best Opera Production’), Iphigenie and Palestrina (Royal Opera House); La Bohème, Tales of Hoffman, Boris Godounov (English National Opera); Julius Caesar, Richard III (RSC); Galileo Galilei, Ivanov (Almeida); Katà Kabanova, Jenůfa, The Makropulos Case, Death in Venice, The Bartered Bride (Glyndebourne); Eugene Onegin (Welsh National Opera); Don Giovanni (Scottish Opera).

 

Abroad, he has designed for the Deutsche Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper, Schillertheater and Schaubühne in Berlin; Staatsoper and Burgtheater in Vienna; La Monnaie, Brussels; Opéra National de Paris; San Francisco Opera; La Scala, Milan; Lyric Opera Chicago; Los Angeles Opera; New York City Opera; Opernhaus, Zürich; Nederlandse Opera; Staatsoper, Hamburg; Bayrische Staatsoper, Munich; and at the Drottningholm Festival, Bregenz Festival, Wiener Festwochen, Maggio Musicale, Festival für alte Musik, Innsbruck, Styriarte Graz, Santa Fe Opera and Glimmerglass Opera Festival.

 

Most recently Tobias designed Les Troyens (Lyric Opera of Chicago), Idomeneo (Essen), Capriccio and Arabella (Santa Fe), Xerxes (Theater an der Wien) and Don Carlo (set) (Bolshoi) and the world premiere of Giorgio Battistelli’s Il Medico dei Pazzi (Opera National Lorraine).
