CHARLES EDWARDS

set and lighting designer

Charles was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London.

He designs sets and lighting for opera internationally.

He has collaborated with directors and choreographers David Alden, Christopher Alden, David McVicar, Karolina Sofulak, Annabel Arden, Matthew Eberhardt, John Savournin and Dane Hurst designing for Opera North, English National Opera, La Scala, Milan, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Hamburgische Staatsoper.

Charles designed sets for ENO’s production of Jenufa which won the Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production in 2007 and Opera North’s Little Greats season, for which he was overall set and lighting designer, won the 2018 What’s On Stage award for Event of the Year, and was nominated for the 2018 Manchester Theatre Award for Opera. The Verdi Trilogy for which Charles designed the sets at the Hamburgische Staatsoper won the 2014 Anniversary Production International Opera Award. La Scala’s 2021 production of La Calisto, for which Charles created the set, won the design prize of Premio Abbiati.
