Matthew trained in New Zealand. He has designed lighting for many of the major opera and theatre companies across the world. 

Theatre lighting designs include Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Park, The Cordelia Dream for Royal Shakespeare Company; Six Characters Looking for an Author, Doctor Faustus, Hobson’s Choice for Young Vic Theatre; #aiww for Hampstead Theatre; Tales of Ballycumber, Only an Apple for Abbey Theatre Dublin; Venice Preserv’d, Hedda Gabler, Creditors for Almeida Theatre; The Birthday Party, Nine Plays and a Recipe for Citizen’s Theatre Glasgow. Other designs include productions for the National, Royal Court, and Old Vic theatres.

Recent designs include King Lear for Det Ferösche Compagnie; Alcina for Opera North and Seattle Opera; RhineGold for Birmingham Opera Company; The Marriage of Figaro for English National Opera; Greek for the Edinburgh Festival / Scottish Opera / BAM New York; Tamerlano and Alcina for La Monnaie Brussels.
